Found in many gas-powered water heaters, the thermocouple is a small metal sensor located near the pilot flame. When heated by the pilot light, it generates a tiny electrical current that signals the gas valve to stay open. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple cools down and stops producing this current, causing the gas valve to close and preventing potentially dangerous gas leaks.
